The grand challenges for engineering

According to the article of Introduction to the Grand Challenges for Engineering on
http://www.engineeringchallenges.org/cms/8996/9221.aspx, nowadays, engineers have several main challenges to be solved. There are sustainability, health, vulnerability, and joy of living.

The challenge that interests me most is health. As the population keeps growing, the demand for health service is increasing. Unfortunately, the population growth surpasses the growth in the number of health services. There are some engineerstasks to overcome this dilemma.

The engineers are required to develop a system which diagnoses a disease faster. They may create a device to access patients' genetic information quickly. By this way, doctors may recognize patients' diseases in a short time. Moreoever, engineers need to build a system which is able to manage and access the patients' data faster and more effectively.

Nowadays, the world is attempting to develop synthetic biology. It is a study of regenerating tissues. It is expected to be able to create new and fresh tissues to replace damaged ones. The engineers play an important role to realize it. Besides inventing numerous systems, engineers need to find ways to create diagnostic devices to be affordable. One of the examples is gene chips functioned in detecting chemical substances in the patientsblood.

In conclusion, the engineers have to face big challenges in improving people's health . They are also required to invent the device with inexpensive cost.

Hello.
I like your article's structure. It is very neat and clear.I agreed that health is very important to human beings, but water quality and many other environmental concerns are closely related to questions of human health.(as mentioned in the Introduction to the Grand Challenges for Engineerig)
That's why I think engineers should deal with the environmental problem first followed by the health.

the article shows good organization and clarity in the flow of ideas. It would be even more impressive if more illustration on current situation and significance of future development was presented.
i must agree with you that health-care poses a major concern in our society, and i believe the blueprint of genome therapy will definitely realize in the near future.

I personally think that you wrote very well! I can see that your essay is very straight to the point. Furthermore, you did have some knowledge in the field of health science, which is quite impressive! But for the conclusion, you had make up a new idea, which i think is a small problem in overall. Anyway, keep up the good work!

health is really a big problem nowadays. But most people in modern society are sufferred from bad air and bad enviroment so that they are not healthy enough. I agree with you but personally i think enviroment is more crucial.

Hi Harris,
While a few of your classmates feel that the environment is a more important issue, I do agree that health is also a major area in which the engineering profession plays a crucial role. You're absolutely right to point out that we need devices that can diagnose illness faster and cheaper. I like the insights here. Keep it up! ~ Ms Khoo :)
